Outdoors we work with soil, salt, rainfall and hurricane season. Indoors those disappear and light becomes the governing factor, along with humidity, air conditioning and how much attention a plant will realistically get. A scheme that ignores those things looks good for a month and declines quietly from there.

The work covers single statement plants, grouped arrangements, full planter schemes across a property, and the ongoing care that keeps them looking like the day they went in.

Most indoor plants that fail in Palm Beach County are not underwatered. They are underlit.

People choose a plant because it looks right, put it where there is space, and then adjust the watering when it starts to struggle. By that point the plant has been in the wrong light for weeks and no watering schedule will fix it.

So we start with the room. A north facing room, a south facing glass wall and a windowless interior corridor support three completely different plant lists, and the difference is far larger indoors than most people expect.

Low light and interior positions

Rooms with no direct sun, north facing spaces, corridors and interior offices.

ZZ plant (Zamioculcas zamiifolia) is the most forgiving plant we use, tolerating low light and irregular watering better than anything else on the list. Snake plant (Sansevieria) does the same job with a more architectural shape. Chinese evergreen (Aglaonema) brings pattern and color into positions where most foliage goes flat. Cast iron plant (Aspidistra elatior) earns its name.

Medium and filtered light

Rooms with bright indirect light, set back from a window or filtered through a blind.

Philodendron and monstera cover the broad leaf tropical look most clients want. Dracaena gives height without bulk. Peace lily (Spathiphyllum) is one of the few plants that flowers reliably in this range, and calathea and anthurium both bring pattern and color where a scheme needs a focal point.

Bright light

Positions near a south or west facing window, or in a room with substantial glass.

Fiddle leaf fig (Ficus lyrata) and rubber plant (Ficus elastica) both want more light than they usually get, which is why they are the most commonly killed houseplants in the county. Bird of paradise (Strelitzia) works well at scale in a bright room. Areca and kentia palms fill a corner without the maintenance a fiddle leaf demands.

This comes up in most consultations and it is worth planning around rather than discovering later.

Several of the most popular indoor plants are toxic to cats and dogs if chewed, including pothos, philodendron, monstera, ZZ plant, snake plant and peace lily. That does not rule them out, but it does affect where they go.

Where a household needs a genuinely pet safe scheme, we work from a different list. Areca palm, parlor palm, calathea, peperomia, spider plant, Boston fern and prayer plant all cover a good range of light levels and leaf shapes without the concern.

Tell us at the consultation if you have animals in the house. It is far easier to design around than to correct.

Workplace planting has different requirements from a home. Light is often entirely artificial or filtered through tinted glass. Air conditioning runs constantly and dries the air more than most tropicals like. Nobody is assigned to look after the plants, which means the scheme has to survive on a maintenance visit rather than on daily attention.

That changes the specification. We lean on species that tolerate low light and irregular care, we size the planters for the traffic, and we build in a maintenance schedule rather than assuming somebody in the office will remember.

The effect is worth the trouble. A reception area with real planting reads completely differently from one without, and it is one of the few improvements to a workspace that is visible the day it is installed.

Outdoors, planters solve the problems beds cannot. They bring planting onto a pool deck, a terrace or a paved entry where there is no soil. They let you change a scheme seasonally without disturbing anything permanent. And they frame a doorway at a scale that a bed at ground level cannot achieve.

Indoors, the planter is as much of the decision as the plant. Proportion, material and finish all have to sit with the room, and drainage has to be handled properly or the plant is on a clock from the day it arrives.

We design planter schemes for both, source the containers along with the plants, and refresh the planting when a season turns or a scheme has run its course.

For clients hosting through the season, we plant specifically for events. That means bringing color and structure into the spaces guests will actually be in, at the point when it matters, rather than hoping the permanent planting peaks on the right weekend.

We also handle the routine refresh for existing schemes. Replacing plants that have finished, updating planters as light in a room changes through the year, and swapping seasonal color.

We source everything we specify, which for interior work often means finding a particular species at a particular size rather than taking what a nursery has on the bench.

We also work as a plant personal shopper for clients who know exactly what they want and would rather not spend three weekends driving between nurseries to find it. That covers specimen material, unusual species and specific container sizes.

1. Consultation. We look at the rooms, the light through the day, the air conditioning and how the space is used. For offices we also look at who will be around to notice a problem.

2. Design. We produce a plan with recommended species, planter specification and placement, and review it with you before anything is ordered.

3. Sourcing and installation. We source the plants and containers, place them and set up the scheme.

4. Ongoing care. We return to maintain, replace and refresh, at whatever interval the scheme needs.

In person consultations start at $250 and include the virtual design. Virtual consultations are $100 per hour and also include the design. We waive the consultation fee on projects above $2,000.

What is plantscaping?

Do you sell or deliver plants?

We do not run a nursery or deliver plants as a standalone product. We source plants as part of a design project, and we also work as a plant personal shopper for clients who want particular species or sizes found for them. The sourcing comes with the design rather than instead of it.

Why do my indoor plants keep dying?

Usually light rather than water. Most people choose a plant for how it looks, put it where there is space, then adjust watering once it struggles. By then it has been in the wrong light for weeks. Matching the plant to the actual light in that position solves more indoor problems than any watering schedule.

What plants survive in a room with no windows?

ZZ plant, snake plant, Chinese evergreen and cast iron plant all tolerate genuinely low light. ZZ plant is the most forgiving of the group and handles irregular watering as well. In a completely windowless space, supplementary lighting extends the range considerably.

Which indoor plants are safe for cats and dogs?

Do you maintain the plants after installation?

Yes, and for offices we would recommend it. We return to water, prune, replace anything that has finished and refresh the planting as seasons change. The visit interval depends on the scheme. Interior planting rarely fails suddenly. It declines slowly, and regular attention is what prevents that.

Can you design outdoor planters as well?

Yes. Planters solve what beds cannot, bringing planting onto a pool deck, terrace or paved entry where there is no soil, and letting a scheme change seasonally without disturbing anything permanent. We design the planting and specify the containers together.

What does interior plantscaping cost?

Consultations start at $250 in person including the virtual design, or $100 per hour virtually. We waive the fee on projects above $2,000. Beyond that, cost depends on the number of positions, the size of the specimens and whether ongoing maintenance is included.
